WHO IS RUTH MEYER?Ruth Freeman Meyer attended Syracuse University in the 1920s, where she met her husband, Syracuse University alumnus Herbert Meyer. Mr. Meyer completed his business degree in 1924, the couple married in 1925, and shortly after they moved to New York City where Mr. Meyer launched a successful career in advertising. Although Ruth Freeman Meyer never graduated from Syracuse University, she always affirmed the importance of education and made significant contributions to several educational institutions, including Syracuse University. Mrs. Meyer was recognized for her life-long philanthropy to education with an honorary degree from Syracuse University in 1964. After many years of support to Syracuse University, Ruth Meyer established the Ruth and Herbert Meyer Scholarship Fund in 1975. Her generosity was to continue, even after her death in 1996 at the age of 93, when Mrs. Meyer bequeathed $12 million to the University — one of the largest individual gifts ever received. Chancellor Kenneth A. Shaw called her gift “a testimony to her abiding concern for future students, those who will never have the chance to meet her, but who benefit from her generosity and foresight.” A portion of this gift supports the Ruth Meyer Scholarship, which provides needed funding for undergraduate research projects. |
